Rose care
A practical care plan for garden roses that come home alive
Rosestyle roses are selected for local pickup, not boxed as ordinary parcels. A little planning on pickup day, during planting, and through the first season helps the plant settle in and reward you for years.
What matters most
Healthy roots, steady moisture, and the right place in the garden.
Most rose problems start with stress: drying out in a hot car, being planted too deep or too shallow, sitting in heavy wet soil, or being squeezed into a corner without airflow. The goal is simple: bring the plant home gently, let it hydrate, plant it where it has sun and space, then keep the first few weeks consistent.
01Pickup day
- Bring the rose home the same day when possible.
- Keep it upright and out of a hot closed vehicle.
- Water thoroughly if the pot feels light or the soil surface is dry.
- If you cannot plant right away, hold it in bright shade and check moisture daily.
02Before planting
- Read the variety habit: shrub, climber, compact rose, or tree rose.
- Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of direct sun when possible.
- Avoid cramped corners with poor airflow, especially near walls or dense hedges.
- Water the pot before planting so the root ball is evenly moist.
03Planting well
- Dig wider than the pot so roots can move into loosened soil.
- Improve heavy clay with compost, but avoid creating a water-holding bowl.
- Set the plant level with the surrounding soil unless your local winter plan calls for deeper protection.
- Water slowly after planting to settle soil around the roots.
First 4 weeks
The settling-in period matters more than perfection.
Newly planted roses do not need constant fussing, but they do need consistency. Check the root zone, not just the surface. In hot or windy weather, containers and new plantings can dry faster than expected.
- Water deeply when the top few centimetres start to dry.
- Keep mulch around the plant, but pull it back from the crown and stems.
- Remove damaged leaves or spent blooms so the plant can put energy into roots and new growth.
- Wait until the plant is actively growing before feeding heavily.
- For climbers and tree roses, add support early so stems are not damaged later.
Seasonal rhythm
What to watch through a GTA growing season
Spring
Prune dead or weak growth after winter damage is clear. Refresh mulch, check supports, and begin watering as the soil warms.
Summer
Water at the base, deadhead repeat bloomers, and watch for heat stress during dry spells. Morning watering is usually easier on the plant.
Fall
Let new growth slow down naturally. Avoid heavy late feeding, clean up fallen diseased leaves, and prepare mulch before deep cold arrives.
Winter
Use the variety's hardiness as a starting point, then adjust for wind, snow cover, containers, and exposed entrances or balconies.
Quick fixes
Common questions after bringing a rose home
The leaves look tired after pickup.
Move the plant into bright shade, water slowly until the pot is evenly moist, and give it a day to recover before planting in heat.
The plant has buds. Should I plant now?
Yes, if the site is ready and weather is reasonable. Handle the root ball gently, water well, and avoid letting the plant dry out while blooming.
How far apart should roses be?
Use the mature width as your guide. Leave enough room for airflow, pruning access, and neighbouring perennials to grow without crowding the rose.
Can roses stay in pots?
Some compact roses can, but containers need more water, insulation, and winter attention. Tree roses and larger shrubs usually need a more deliberate plan.
Need help choosing?
Start with a rose that fits your sun, space, and care style.
If you are unsure whether you need a climber, fragrant shrub, tree rose, or an easier repeat bloomer, the Rosestyle Concierge can narrow the list before pickup.
